If so, are you happy? If the answer is no, then you have to find a higher cause to why you are unhappy with your work.

Working for opportunity takes you beyond the meaningless toil that happens daily. Look beyond your job description and ask:
· What is my responsibility in my company? How dependable am I?
· What abilities do I possess? Am I maximizing my talents? What other skills must I have?
· What is my role in my company? Do I play a big part? Am I a star? How to become one?
· What is my status in my company? How do I improve my status? How can I expand my influence onto others?
· Successful people have the big picture outlook to work, to home and in life. Do I have that big picture outlook?

Start working on the 5 answers above and you will start working for a higher purpose. Opportunity awaits...

No longer do you finish a job just because you have to. No. Instead, each tiny work done is just part of a bigger mission. No one really pushes paper all day… unless you refuse see anything beyond that.

Hint: The more you put into life, the more it pays.
All ideas, comments and quotes are not for free distribution or use. (An article for Salesmen)

pic: Daniel Kwok’s adidas Banshee since 1998

Some advice on how to afford new “stuff” you have always wanted.

See this shoe? I have had it ever since the late nineties... still using it. Yes. I know it is time to replace it. But how can I afford it?

There are a few things in my “Things To Buy” list. I want a PDA hand-phone, a new digital camera and a new shoe. On top of that, I would be looking into furnishing a new apartment later this year.

If you so happen to be in Sales (selling for a commission), then you might probably want to recalculate your earnings to reflect your “wants”. Being in sales is a great help for people who want to earn more for their time. And by aligning your “wants” to your commission, you will have the biggest motivation anyone could ever receive.

Calculate backwards

Lets say you want to earn $20K this year. Calculate backwards how much you should sell just to achieve $20K. This new figure is your Personal Target. From there, plan your sales accordingly by quarter, by month and by week. By calculating this way, you may notice that your personal target may be higher than the target your company has set for you.

Does your personal target exceed the target set for you?
Not to worry. Your company has told you not to fall short of your target, but never to stopped you from surpassing it. Just go for it! Let next year worry for itself. Who knows, just by exceeding your sales target you will be promoted to Sales Manager and never worry about sales targets anymore? After all, if you can achieve and surpass your company’s targets, you deserve greater challenges, bigger responsibilities and a higher pay check than what you are receiving.

If it is too much, review your “wants”. Perhaps you do not need it after all? Are there any other alternatives?

Look for other cheaper alternatives.
My adidas Banshee has been coming apart at the seams. At $200 bucks a pair, I have figured that I can still use it after it comes back from the cobbler. I could probably use it until the end of 2006.

Borrowing things from people who are able to lend it to you is also a cheaper alternative. Renting is also an alternative.

What if I don’t do sales or don’t receive a commission?
In your own time start analyzing avenues in your workplace that allows you for a higher income.
1) Analyze your company’s mission and vision to see if you can align your growth accordingly.
2) Analyze your company’s hierarchy to chart your own growth. Perhaps even help create a new department (which you will head) or innovate a new range of products that will grow into a cash cow.

Never allow yourself to fall into the “overtime” trap. Overtime is never a long term strategy. If getting yourself promoted means studying for a Masters in your field, working on extra projects, improving on work conditions around your workplace, or even learning to manage others, do that.

Work on things to accomplish apart from your day-to-day work. You are paid your salary to perform your day-to-day work. You will not receive anything more unless you start taking on your boss’s work. Then, you can receive his salary too.

The secret in affording what you want.
The secret is working hard to accomplish things that will either get sales for you (if you are in sales) or get you promoted. Working hard alone does not cut it. Working hard with a purpose can and will bring you to a higher plane in your company.

Keep On Running!

Concepts and ideas are borrowed from friends and my working environment.
All ideas, comments and quotes are not for free distribution or use. Have you wished for something and got it later as a gift?

Call it pure coincidence or luck. Perhaps it is a gift from the Gods as a reward for your complete and undying faith in Him / Her. Maybe you attribute it to your positive Karma generated from past merits. Or perhaps just good Feng Shui.

Whatever your faith, you do attract things or people towards you. Yes! You attract both what you want and don’t want.

So how can we make our magnetic minds work for us? How can I attract what I want?

In my personal observation, and discussions with like-minded people, here are some clues on how our mind-magnet works:

1) Your belief and confidence (commitment) must be real and complete. For example if you are confident that a parking will appear at your asking, it will. Half beliefs will produce half results, late results or smaller results.

2) Requests or prayers out of fear will never work. If there is any doubt or confusion in your thoughts, your mind will not attract your wishes in a positive manner. The opposite will usually come true.

3) Wishes come true when there is no ill-will. That means that wishes that arise from greed will not come true. Greedy thoughts result in loss rather than gain. Jealousy chases your dreams away. Wishes that arises because of "fear of loosing" (loosing a friendship, relationship or money) will encourage loss rather than gain.

4) Positive vibes / positive environments will encourage your wishes to happen. There can be no growth in the desert of negativity. Water your world with love. Allow generosity to shine in your garden of happiness.

This means: Do good and enjoy doing good... You will get goodness in return. Give to others what they truly want or need. Request or make wishes for the things you really want and deserve. Ask for it (from God or from Karma or from Newton’s Law of Action or Reaction) with a mind full of confidence. Once given, receive the gift with thanks, love and honest gratitude. Share the gift with others.

Q: What if whatever I have wished for is given to someone else?
A: Then rejoice and be happy for that person who received it. No sense in feeling sad or jealous because by doing so, you will chase your wishes away. Better yet, be humble and congratulate that person genuinely. Your positive thoughts and words will make your dreams come true faster.

Your mind is a magnet of things to come. Whatever happens in your life was attracted by your mind. What is spoken is released into the universe.

It is believed that the spoken word - be it sweet or foul – can never be retracted. Spoken words are sound waves, an energy form. Like all forms of energy, it can never be destroyed, only transformed into other forms. Do not take lightly the words that will come out of your mouth, the affects will linger in the universe forever.

If this is true, positive words result in positive energy waves, into positive thoughts and actions and so on. Like wise, negative words will result in negative waves, smashing itself into whatever lies in its path.

It is even believed that negative words once spoken will remain forever bouncing off walls and trees… resulting in random negative vibes that you receive now and again.

What this boils down to is:
1) Positive and encouraging thoughts can shape our realities.
2) Positive words to ourselves and others can heal and produce good results
3) Positive intentions without action can make a difference, let alone the positive action itself.

Words shaped and pressed by our lips have great impact on the world. Sharp wounding words shaped by hate are equal to any physical weapon. They injure the listener, perhaps for life. Each time the words are remembered, the wound gets deeper.

Healing emotional wounds requires forgiveness and lots of encouraging and positive words and thoughts.

So dear reader… start sending positive thoughts and saying words of encouragement.

A loving touch that starts from the heart can stop bleeding faster. Food cooked with love tastes better and is emotionally nutritious. Go ahead, heal the world with your thoughts and speech today.
All ideas, comments and quotes are not for free distribution or use. Goals that are harmless, but bring much profit and progress to everyone are best.
3) Set goals that will help you build foundational strengths. For instance, if you want to be more healthy and muscular, you might want to look into improving your stamina first before taking up weights. Building on your foundations will allow you to be able to "expand" on your long term goals later.

Knowing what you will get in the end will make it easier to decide what your goals are this year. So go ahead... Decide in advance what you want to give to yourself this year. Only then can you stop presenting unexpected surprises to yourself on a yearly basis.

Happy New Year 2006 !
All ideas, comments and quotes are not for free distribution or use. Sometimes I would have two shopping lists, a to-do list for my wedding, a work to-do list and a home to-do list! Of course, all of them may be necessary, but only by centralizing all of them into a single place and comparing each task, can we begin to see their respective Priorities. From there, plan your workflow.

You might need to invest in a to-do "collection" tool. This comes in the form of Diaries, date books, personal computers and PDAs. The plus point of putting your to-do's in electronic form is that you can set an alarm or reminder to it. It may take a while to make it a habit to collect and update all your to-do's into one main place, but it's worth it.

When jotting down your To-do entry, try to describe the task and the Forward Action / Next Action. If this is not done, procrastination and doubt might set in. Even worse, we might soon forget why we need to do the task in the first place (until someone reminds us at the last minute and it’s too late to do anything). All the best in compiling your To-do's. May your life flourish and your peace of mind blossom!
All ideas, comments and quotes are not for free distribution or use. Notice that office mate who talks about sports 24-7? That's his personal brand. If you want to talk about sports, there is no one else but him.

So what do you do? If there is ONE message you are giving people, which is it?

Are you the tragic complainer? Or the restaurant and food expert? The holiday planner? The fiction book reader? The financial expert? The mother of two? The clown? The gossip? Do you enjoy being branded this way?

If you have evolved into someone you do not want to be, perhaps it is time to build or reposition your Personal Brand.

I find that Personal Branding starts from:
1) how you think into
2) how you talk (and what you talk about) into
3) what you do, what car you drive and what colour you are wearing today.

You can choose to "sharpen" yourself as you like. It all starts by thinking like champion, then talking like one and finally acting like one each day. Happy branding!
All ideas, comments and quotes are not for free distribution or use. Why the extra hours. What goes into the hours?

Let’s look beyond our ages and our jobs. If you want extra out of life, you have to give extra and that is what I have understood finally.

So must a person do with 14 hours a day for the next 7 years that will lead to success?

Let’s break it down.

If my normal working hours are from 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. with an hour of lunch in between, I had better make these hours count for what they are worth before I look into putting myself for an extra 5 hours of work.

First I would have to measure my effectiveness at work. Am I goofing off 30% of the time socializing with my workmates, Surfing the net for personal reasons 20% of the time? If so, I cannot count this into my work day.

The idea of having a 14 hour day is to see if I can build the extra 5 hours to “sharpen the saw”. The rest of the 9 hours at work is to finish the regular work that we are assigned.

This means that 1 hour from the “saw sharpening” time is to exercise. Perhaps I exercise 3 times in a week, then I can spend 2 hours for a full exercise routine each time I exercise.

What goes into the extra 4 hours? I propose Planning, reading and writing and executing. I will write on this further in detail.

That leaves around 10 more hours of my day. Everyone who lives more than 10 minutes from their workplace will spend 3-4 hours a day in transit or just waiting for something.

That leaves around 7 hours to spend being with your loved ones and sleeping.

Can a person live like this, with these sacrifices in life and still be happy? I say yes. If “sharpening the saw” means improving your life.

Bear in mind, this is what your company gives you 14 paid leaves in a year for. To rest and plan and do your banking. Your weekends also to rest and refocus. It is possible. How can I commit to a 14-hour day? By guilt, by dreams, by external motivation and by sheer effort. If you want to talk about someone who works 14 hours a day at one job for the next 7 years to be the best in Malaysia, well talk about me. I will take that step now.

Concepts are borrowed or rehashed. Well why not start with a dream?

Dreams are our first steps to being successful. And banking on the fact that no one dreams to be unsuccessful, dreams can be a great tool to work on if you want to be successful.

Once you have gotten enough courage to dream about success, here is what you do:

1) Decide what success means to you.
2) Decide how you are going to achieve it.
3) Decide now what sacrifices you have to make in order to help you achieve it.
4) Plan accordingly your year, your quarters your months and your days so that you can achieve it.
5) Do it according to plan and know exactly why you need to work as hard as you have to.

Step 1 means that you have to decide what goes into your life and what does not. As a person has 70 odd years in life, there will be a chance to achieve everything that you want in life. But that means you will have to plan it now. To some success is traveling the world. To others, it is a clean bill of health. To many, it is financial freedom. You can have all of these too, but that means you have to work harder at it. More importantly, dream big and dream realistic.

Step 2, “Deciding how you are going to achieve it” means judging on everything that you wish to do, how are you going to achieve it? With the salary that you are receiving, the time you are putting in to work on your dreams, versus the size of your dreams, is it possible that your dream will come true? At this step, rescale your efforts versus your expectations.

Step 3, to decide your sacrifices, is to decide on the matters decided on Step 2. Will working 14 hours in a day help you achieve your goals? Does that mean you skip on watching TV, exercising or going for short holidays? Re-look at Step 1 and decide how much of time or effort you would have to put in to reach that goal.

At this juncture, you will realize no one likes to dream because dreaming about grand futures will result in us actually putting it to work and sacrificing other dreams. Trust in yourself. Trust that your dreams are worth the effort.

Step 4 means planning how hard you work at your current job. Most of the time we do not need a lottery strike to be able to achieve our dreams. Compare salaries with the ones that your boss is receiving. Ask yourself what skills must you have or roles you have to play to be your boss? Do you need to learn these skills? Make sure the entire year is filled with milestones to achieve this dream. Maybe in the first month you will take on more responsibilities from your boss. By mid year, you are the expert that your boss can rely on. By the next year, you convince your boss to make you the official champion for your department and a small change in your designation. Step 4 also involves living your dream right now. If your dream is to travel the world, do plan and save for something big in the future, but you can also do mini trips or picnics this week end. If your plan is to spend more time with your family, plan yearly quarterly and monthly, even weekly activities. Make sure that you practice your plan later.

Step 5 is the best part. Actually doing the activities you have set out to do. The danger is that we start walking the way and go astray or even stop walking it later. This step calls for us to trust in our plans and stand firm in our dreams. It might be easy to say, “My dreams are too difficult to achieve” and give up immediately. But recall the words of the wise, that everything can be achieved if you were diligent.

If you are feeling tired or doubtful if your dreams are ever going to come true, talk to friends about your dreams and tell them how hard your wish to be working. Find friends who will encourage you honestly to be around you. Avoid people who will discourage your efforts or laugh at your dreams.

One day your dreams will become reality. But only if you are brave enough to take the first step and walk until you have come to the end. Be brave to hang on in your journey. Be resilient.

All concepts above are either borrowed or rehashed. Furniture and other decorative items can prove a hassle to hunt for, lots of thinking and may burn a hole on your bank card.

The solution is to do some “Mental Shopping”. Much like window shopping, you now shop with a pencil and a paper. Here is the step-by-step of how I did it:

1) Pretend that money is not the objective and you can spend it all on quality items or things that you would really like to have.
2) Write the name of the item, its dimensions and its price.
3) Shop for the next item.
4) Stop only when there is nothing more to "buy".

Note: A good place to do this activity is in your local “All-Under-One-Roof” furniture shop.

When you have finished, sit down with a calculator and a cup of tea and add up the entire list. What’s the total? If you think it is too expensive, perhaps you might want to rethink about some items on your list? Sum up the list again. In a perspective, this is the amount you have to earn or save to achieve your dream home. Perhaps you can set this amount as your target in the quest to achieve comfortable living?

This target is your cost ceiling or the “maximum you will need to spend”. Next, look for areas to trim. You may wish to search for similar but cheaper items elsewhere. It would mean that you will spend more time hunting and bargaining. Factor the time and effort as part of the cost of a dream home.

Mental Shopping helps you plan for your future and see in advance the dream home you will have one day. Happy living!!

picture posted by Daniel
All ideas, comments and quotes are not for free distribution or use. At most times, that makes a song sound weird. And if it happens throughout the song, you might grow dislike it too.

That’s not saying that some songwriters are weak in rhyming. Perhaps they just lack the resources in finding good rhymes. If you would read on, I will tell you the way out!

I have read that there are 2 types of rhymes, Perfect Rhymes and Half Rhymes.
For example, Sing and Ring are perfect rhymes, while Song and Warm are half rhymes.

Half rhymes work (depending on how you sing it) because once the word is spoken or sung, only the vowels (A, E, I, O, U) is heard. The ending of each word is left to fade away. Try to say (or sing) these two lines:

I’ll sing you a song,
It’ll make you feel warm.

May not look right, but sounds great. Not bad for a half rhyme. So why do I sometimes choose half rhymes over perfect rhymes?

For the simple reason that you cannot be rhyming Seven and Heaven or Desire and Fire and Higher for every songs! Using too much Perfect Rhymes is dead boring! To have more variety of words to use, try Half Rhymes.

Words that end with M may rhyme with ones that end with N. B ended words may match with Ds. Words that end with Y fit with Ws. Try to think of others.

And if you are still adamant in looking out for perfect rhymes, look out for a rhyming dictionary. I have found one on-line http://www.rhymezone.com/

Rhyming takes just a little bit more of your creativity and it can be as intense and as fun as building a jigsaw puzzle. You will try again and again to fit pieces of your rhymes together until you eventually finish your song. But it's truly satisfying. A masterpiece!

I wish you my kind of success with songs. If you want some advice with songwriting, feel free to drop a line in the comment box.

Remember, songs are not poems. If you want them to sound better, make sure it rhymes! Happy writing!
All ideas, comments and quotes are not for free distribution or use. What better time then now to jot down interesting things to do? For me, it has been a constant challenge to stop sounding negetive and dejected with life.
